. Abstract – The aim this study is to finding out the students’ ability in using passive voice of simple past tense. Subjects taken were the second year students in SMAN 1 Lingsar Academic Year 2013/2014. This study seeks to identify the students’ ability in understanding the structure of passive voice of simple past tense. In this study 60 students were taken as the samples out of 240 students’ population. In collecting the data, the writer employed objective test which consisted of 40 items; 20 items of multiple choices and 20 sentence transformation test items. This study used a descriptive quantitative research working on a single variable. After analyzing and computing the collected data, it was identified that the highest score obtained by the students was 60, the lowest was 3, and students’ mean score was 21.8. As the calculation points out, the whole samples (100%) failed to reach the score of 65 as the minimum completion score. Only 35% percent of students succeeded in objective multiple choice test and only less than 30% of students are capable to provide relevant answer in sentence transformation test. Based on this figures, students’ ability in using passive voice of simple past tense can be categorized as very poor.
Key words: student’s ability, passive voice, simple past tense
It is very understandable that any human language completely functions as the vehicle of communication, whereby different meanings, ideas, opinions, messages, and feelings can be most effectively and lucidly expressed, communicated and shared out. Bloomfield (1979) convincingly argues that language plays a great part in the life of human beings. Therefore, the more languages one can speak the more meaningfully he would likely be to communicate and interacts with others.
English is an international language. Almost all countries have adopted English used as a compulsory subject at schools. The University Indonesia has decided that English as a foreign language taught in Indonesian schools. It is learned from primary schools to university. People realize that teaching English at this level becomes very important and need much concern. Besides, English teachers had long been demanded to explore and figure out effective techniques, method, and approaches to help their students mastering English. One of the topics in English grammar that must be learnt by the students is passive voice. Passive voice is the verb form, where the subject receives the action. Thomson and Martinet (19 86 ) stated that the passive of an active tense is formed by putting the verb to be in to the same tense as the active verb and adding the past participle of the active verb. For example: a. Julia wrote the report (active) b.The report was written by julia (passive)
Active Voice Passive Voice Subject +( doer of action ) = Julia Subject + (receiver of action)= The report
Action Verb = Wrote Auxiliary verb = Was Written
Object ( receiver of action )= The report Past Participle = By Julia
From the example above, in a simple rule, the sentence in the active voice can be transformed to the passive voice in which the subject in the active becomes the object in passive voice. The passive of an active tense is formed by putting the verb to be in to the same tenses as the active verb and adding the past participle of the active verb. The subject of the active verbs becomes the agent of the passive verb. The agent is very often to be mentioned, when it is mentioned, it proceeds by “by’ and placed at the end of the sentence. There are some previous researchers who had ever analyzed student’s ability in using passive voice at Senior High School and some of them suggested for those are interested in analyzing about passive voice are capable of doing so at other different schools. Considering that suggestion, I choose the second year students of SMAN 1 Lingsar to conduct a survey study to find out in what extent

5.1 Conclusion Based on the previous chapter, this study could be concluded that The mean score of the second year students of SMAN 1 Lingsar in understanding passive voice of simple past tense was 21,28. So the second year students of SMAN 1 Lingsar are not able to reach 65 as the minimum compilation score determined by English teacher for English class at SMAN 1 Lingsar. This Phenomenon was determined by categories as follows. The highest score of students after given test is 60 and the lowest is 3 from 100 as maximum total score and the minimum compilation score is 65. Students’ ability in understanding the structure of Passive Voice of simple past tense is categorized very poor. Student’s poor understanding relies on their lack of understanding on the auxiliary verbs and the proper verbs form.Their poor understanding also relies on lacks of context understanding and background knowledge. This is shown by the results that 80 - 100% of the students fail to provide the respective verbs in the more contextually sophisticated sentence transformation. In multiple choices, where the verbs are familiar, 36% of students succeed in providing the correct structure. In sentence transformation test, the result is less satisfying because less than 31% students succeed in transforming active sentence into passive Voice of simple past tense.
5. 2 Suggestion Based on the result of the research, the writer would like to put forward the following suggestion concerning the ability in understanding the structure of passive voice of simple past tense. The students have to learn carefully the simple past tense. The students are strongly suggested to understand and learn more the concept of passive voice, especially passive voice of simple past tense. The Teacher have to use more approach, technique of teaching strategy. Especially related with essay. Such as Drilling, Word Play and Filling Gap.
