Social media companies have come under increasing scrutiny for their data privacy practices, particularly in light of recent data breaches. For example, in 2018, LinkedIn experienced a data breach in which the personal data of approximately 500 million users was stolen by a third- party actor. The data breach included users' email addresses, phone numbers, and other personal information (Civati, 2021). With the increasing amount of personal data being generated and shared online, it is important to have strong data protection laws in place to safeguard the privacy of individuals.
