Syllabus for Teens v FOREWORD T he vision to impact generations is one that seeks to ensure that there is continuity in a healthy relationship between God and succeeding generations, as has existed with the current generation of Christians in the Church of Pentecost. The youth are the ‘immediate next generation’, and hence the passion of leadership is to mentor and impact them adequately to prepare them for the imminent future. We thank God for helping the leadership of the Youth Ministry to come out with this timely syllabus to guide classes for TEENS in our local assemblies. The content is suitable for building the youth up in the Lord and make them more responsible adults to the Church and the nation. There are so many issues and voices that are competing with the church for the attention of the youth: occultism, cyber-crimes, same-sex marriages, pornography etc. If you are a leader in these times, you must be abreast with this ever-changing context, and more than that, you must bring solutions where there are challenges, and evolve biblical responses that ensure that your followers remain both relevant and safe. This material must motivate youth leaders in the Church to study and prepare lesson notes that meet the contemporary needs of the

Syllabus for Teens vii INTRODUCTION E ffective youth work in contemporary times requires well balanced, spiritually stimulating, intellectually sound and culturally contextualized teaching and learning materials. This syllabus is designed to help leaders as well as our most treasured TEENS to engage with everyday issues of life, using the scriptures as ‘PATHFINDER’ and hermeneutic; showing the way and giving meaning to our day to day choices and actions. You will find that, unlike the content of a traditional syllabus, some teaching notes have been infused into the material to make it easy for teachers to teach everywhere they may find themselves. This material is not an encyclopedia or one-stop knowledge bank. You are therefore required to pool resources from other sources to enrich your actual delivery based on your geographical location. Our gallant Area Youth Pastors and PENSA Travelling Secretaries are a rich and formidable resource bank you can always draw from. You may call any of them to seek clarity on any subject should the need arise. Members of the National Executive Committee as well as the Youth Directorate at the Headquarters can always be consulted for any further assistance. Make sure you apply good methods of engaging your students: discuss, involve, dramatize, use illustrations and so on, to make

OBJECTIVES

By the end of the lesson the young person would be able to:

  • Confidently affirm his/her assurance of salvation provided by the death and resurrection of Jesus Christ.
  • Say what salvation is not.
  • Define salvation.
  • Tell the basis of their salvation.
  • Enumerate the hindrances to salvation. EXPOSITION A. SALVATION AND ASSURANCE In answer to the question: ‘Are you saved?’, many Christians say: “I think so” or ‘I hope so’ or “We will be sure when we get to heaven”. Others say: “Only God can tell”. When you ask a question like: “Are you married”? People answer, “yes” “or” “no” and they are sure. (Teacher may ask other questions). Salvation is a miracle of change, and we ought to know with full assurance whether that change has taken place or not. B. ASSURANCE OF SALVATION EXPLAINED What do we mean when we say one has assurance of salvation? The saved person has absolute confidence that he is saved and that if he died suddenly, he would go to heaven.

C. WHO MUST HAVE ASSURANCE OF SALVATION?

Those who have accepted Jesus Christ as their personal Saviour should have the assurance of salvation. (Read John 1: 12; John 3: 16, John 3:36). D. BASIS OF ASSURANCE OF SALVATION Assurance of salvation is not based on feelings or circumstances. God has given us three things upon which to base our assurance: (i) The witness of the Holy Spirit (Romans 8:16). Before we accept the Lord Jesus as Lord and saviour, the Holy Spirit convicts us of sin, righteousness and judgment. After conversion, the Holy Spirit gives an inner peace to the believer and confirms to him that he is a child of God. Read Galatians 4:6. (ii) Faith in the Word of God (1 John 5:13).

  • The Holy Spirit witnesses through the Word of God (1 John 5:13).
  • The Apostle John wants those who BELIEVE to KNOW that they are saved, not merely to hope.
  • When we become Christians, the devil will come many times to tempt us and make us doubt our salvation.
  • Say to Satan, “The Word of God says that if I believe on Jesus Christ, I have eternal life.” I have believed on the Lord, so I am saved, and my sins are forgiven. (John 10:27-29; 1 John 5:11-13)
  • Build your assurance on the Word of God.

OVERVIEW

P ersonal Devotion is a spiritual exercise that helps a believer to have a one-to-one interaction with God through prayer, reading of the Word and meditation. This is known sometimes as Quiet Time. Quiet Time practitioners have a systematic walk with God, thus growing steadily in the Lord.
