Job Description
Working as part of a multi-disciplinary team with a high degree of autonomy, the Social Worker is
responsible for ensuring the Family Practice Division (“the Division”) provides holistic responses to
clients’ needs, and legal staff within the Division are supported to ensure holistic file management.
In support of Independent Children’s Lawyers (“ICLs”) of the Division, the Social Worker shall
provide assistance to the ICL with child interviews and thereafter, as required, provide affidavit
evidence to the Court.
In support of other legal staff of the Division, the Social Worker shall liaise with clients towards
maximizing their parenting capacity through the provision of social support services including
safety planning, risk assessment, interagency advocacy, facilitated referrals, issuing and
monitoring drug test requests, and support of clients engaging in programs.
The Social Worker is required to engage in reportable work with clients of the Division, including
being appointed by the Family Court as Single Expert Witness on discrete files and thereafter
investigating and producing Single Expert Witness reports for the Family Court, including the
provision of witness evidence under cross examination at trial.
The Social Worker arranges and delivers or in the alternative, assists legal staff in the delivery of
internal and external training including Family Law related Community Legal Education and
development of resources. They also provide a mentoring and supervision role to staff in relation
to client related social issues such as: children being exposed to high conflict between parents;
dysfunctional communication; management of mental health; drug dependence and use; addiction
associated problems; and/or housing and homelessness
Additional responsibilities include support to the Director of the Division by way of policy and
procedural advice and contributing to social analysis of family law reform.

Selection Criteria

ESSENTIAL

  • Knowledge of social and emotional issues experienced by clients and their children in family law parenting matters. (High priority)
  • Demonstrated experience in working with children and families who are at high risk of exposure to abuse including from family and domestic violence, neglect, sexual abuse and physical harm. (High priority)
  • Demonstrated experience in interviewing children. (High priority)
  • Good written communication skills including the ability to develop court reports, publications and training materials.
  • Highly developed interpersonal and communication skills including the ability to work collaboratively with internal and external multi-disciplinary stakeholders.
  • Demonstrated experience in working with the culturally and linguistically diverse Western Australian community.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of Western Australian community-based advice/support services.
  • Ability to deliver social issue related training and provide peer support/supervision.

    • A degree in Social Work from a recognised University (Essential)
    • Working with Children Card (Essential)
    • Registered mental health practitioner (Desirable)
    • ‘C’ or ‘CA’ Class Western Australian Driver’s licence or equivalent. (Desirable) All appointments to Legal Aid Western Australia are subject to satisfactory National Police Certificate and 100 Point Identification Check.

Remuneration Information

Terms, Conditions and Benefits

  • Fixed Term, Full Time.
  • Salary range: Government Officers’ Salaries Allowances and Conditions Award 1989 – Public Service and Government Officers General Agreement 201 7. Specified Calling, Level 3 , $ 108 ,533 - $119,969 gross per annum.
  • Benefits: 9.50% employer superannuation contributions paid to GESB or the superannuation scheme of your choice. Annual leave loading up to a maximum of $1761.80 per annum.
  • Excellent salary packaging scheme. Subject to the requirements of relevant taxation legislation, rulings and determinations, employees of Legal Aid WA are able to salary package a percentage of base salary as a combination of “cash” benefit items. Non-cash benefit items include superannuation, lease of motor vehicle for private use, home mortgage payments, home rental payments, school fees, health and life insurance, living expenses and meal entertainment.
