PROCEDURE: RISK ASSESSMENT
INTRODUCTION
As part of managing the health and safety of our business, we must control the risks in our
workplace. We will consider what might cause harm to employees (and others) and decide
whether we are taking reasonable steps to prevent that harm.
Our work activities have the potential to expose employees to risks. Employers and employees can
effectively manage the risks created by work activities and the interaction with health and safety.
The intent of this procedure is to demonstrate how we will prevent or control this risk.
We will show how we meet the requirements of the Health and Safety at Work etc. Act, the
Management of Health and Safety at Work Regulations and other statutory provisions not listed
here.
We will:
ensure that suitable and sufficient risk assessments are carried out and additional control
measures are implemented as required; and
provide appropriate training where necessary.
1.0 PURPOSE
The intent of this procedure is to prevent accidents, incidents, injury and ill health arising
from any interaction between employees and work activities.
2.0 SCOPE
This procedure outlines the management of risk assessment to assist in the prevention of
accident, incident, injury and ill health. This procedure covers all areas of our activities
throughout the business.
3.0 ROLES & RESPONSIBILITIES
The person responsible for implementing this procedure will carry out or delegate such
functions as necessary to ensure the effective day-to-day operation of our health and safety
arrangements.
Where the responsibility to carry out risk assessments is delegated, the individual(s) will
have the necessary expertise and competence to carry out the task.
Managers/Supervisors are responsible for:
implementing this procedure in their area of responsibility;
ensuring that an assessment of the risks is carried out and additional control
measures implemented as required;
consulting with those affected regarding the risk assessment process; and
providing appropriate training.

RISK ASSESSMENT

Employees are responsible for:

  • ensuring that they do not endanger their own health and safety or the health and safety of any other person; and
  • consulting with managers to develop appropriate measures to control risk associated with work activities. 4.0 PROCEDURE The management of risk will be carried out in accordance with this procedure, relevant legislation and HSE Guidance. We will ensure that we:
  • identify all hazardous activities where there is a risk of accident, incident, injury or ill health;
  • complete an evaluation of the working arrangements against the risk of accident/incident or injury or ill health is carried out, risk assessment. We will take into account issues such as working at height, fire, dangerous parts of machinery and guarding, (this is not an exhaustive list);
  • provide risk assessors with adequate information, instruction and training to ensure that risk assessments are suitable and sufficient; and
  • review this procedure at least annually or more frequently if significant changes occur. 5.0 DEFINITIONS Risk Assessment - A risk assessment is a careful examination of anything in your work and environment that could cause harm to people, taking into account its severity. There are 5 steps:
  • Step 1 - Identify the activity and hazards;
  • Step 2 - Decide who might be harmed and how;
  • Step 3 - Evaluate the risks and determine the controls required
  • Step 4 - Record the findings and implement them; and
