Portsmouth College: Transforming the Library into a Learning Resource Centre, Schemes and Mind Maps of School management&administration

Portsmouth College received £1.6 million Capital funding in 2011 to modernize its facilities, including the library. The project involved removing old bookcases, reducing book stock, installing new PCs and Macs, and refurbishing the area. The Learning Support area, Focus, was moved into the LRC, offering one-on-one student support. Future plans include expanding I.T rooms, developing e-learning, and creating group work areas.

PORTSMOUTH

COLLEGE

From a Library to a Learning

Resource Centre

Background

Portsmouth College is a small community

Sixth Form College. There are 960

students aged 16-19 and 500 mainly part

time adult students.

The Library

The library was very out dated and did not meet the needs of the students and staff The key issues were :

  • Many of the 16,000 books were old and had been rarely taken out by students
  • Very few students were using the area, which had the potential to be a very good learning space
  • There was only a limited number of old PC’s and some laptops
  • The space was dominated by large bookcases which gave a very dated feel to the area.

The new LRC

In March 2011 the College was awarded £1. million of Capital funding as part of the Building Conditions Improvement Fund (BCIF)

A number of projects took place:

  • New windows and cladding of the main block
  • New cladding of the Art block
  • New Fitness suite
  • New Kitchen area
  • LRC project

Focus

  • We moved Focus into the LRC
  • Focus is our Learning support area
  • A team provide 1:1 support for students

who need support throughout the year

  • Any student can visit the area and get

support. This might be for essay writing, revision skills, exam technique or on how to be more organised

The future

In the summer 2012 we intend to :

Include a further 20 PC’s in the area

Create a staff training area/drop in centre

Create an area for student group work

Further develop our intranet system-

Moodle

Invest more in e-learning materials
