Identify and behave as a professional social worker, committed to professional development
Social workers are members of an internationally recognised profession. Our title is protected in UK law. We demonstrate professional commitment by taking responsibility for
our conduct, practice, self-care and development. We seek and use supervision and other professional support. We promote excellent practice, and challenge circumstances
that compromise this. As representatives of the profession, we safeguard its reputation. We are accountable to people using services, the public, employers and the regulator.
We take ethical decisions in the context of multiple accountabilities.
I am able to meet the requirements of the professional

Supporting a grandmother in England who was applying for
Kinship of her grandchildren whom were currently in foster-
care in Scotland. I had to familiarise myself with the process,
procedure and legislation adhered to in Scotland to enhance
my understanding and knowledge.
I subscribe to Social Work Today magazine, Community Care
and BASW. This has helped me to stay informed of what is
happening in social work not only in England but

I demonstrate an effective and active use of supervision for accountability, professional reflection and development

  • Preparation for supervision sessions with both my Practice Educator and Placement Supervisor, ensuring I have a list of the things I need to cover in supervision to contribute towards the agenda.
  • Agreeing time scales for any actions to be completed and by whom during the supervision, revisiting if this has been done at the next supervision.

  • I have researched applicable theories to the work I have been undertaking and explored these in reflective supervision with my Practice Educator.
  • I often incorporate 30mins at the end of the working day to use Siobhan Maclean’s theory app- the envelope activity. This provides me with other theories to consider in relation to what I am doing. - Stored envelope activities in the app I, with support, take steps to manage and promote safety, health, well-being, self-care and emotional resilience
  • I recognise the need to take care of my own health, wellbeing, safety and resilience. I have actively done this through ensuring I allocate myself time in my calendar to take a lunch break, not working past my hours except when absolutely necessary, doing things that I enjoy and find relaxing. For example, in the evenings I walk my dog and I ensure that I do not do academic work on Sundays.

  • Throughout the COVID-19 pandemic there were a number of concerns in relation to carrying out the work to support children and young people also whilst being mindful of our own health and wellbeing. I actively participated in team meetings/ discussions that explored the agencies policy ang guidance around this.
  • During the Covid- 19 Pandemic I respectfully and professionally challenged a head teacher who would not allow me access to a child as it related to a safeguarding concern I was able to explain why I need to see the child and I did see the child while following the government guidelines on social distancing

Domain 2: Values and Ethics Apply social work ethical principles and values to guide professional practice Social workers have an obligation to conduct themselves and make decisions in accordance with our Code of Ethics. This includes working in partnership with people who use our service. We promote human rights and social justice. We develop and maintain our understanding of the value base of our profession throughout our career, its ethical standards and relevant law. I understand and apply the profession’s ethical principles and legislation, taking account of these in reaching decisions

  • I have been able to apply the principles of the legislation applicable to my placement. I have spent time when carrying out work to consider which section of the particular legislation is applicable and for what purpose. I have been able to discuss this in supervision with my PS and PE.
  • During the placement I have had to face ethical dilemmas in relation to applying the legislation. For example, the Childs needs being paramount within the Children’s Act and our duty of care towards them which can often be in conflict with the Human Rights Act – right to private and family life. In addition to this families were also refusing social workers access throughout the Covid-19 pandemic advising they were shielding or isolating. - E-learning - Critical Incident analysis - Safeguarding training certificate - Copy of the regulations stored to my desktop I recognise and, with support, explore and manage the impact of own values on professional practice
  • My PE an I have explored this in supervision on several occasions. I realise that there are occasions when my personal and professional values are in conflict and how this might impact on my practice. Therefore, when I recognise this, I use my reflective diary to further explore this.
