Mitosis vs. Meiosis
Worksheet
1. We know that cells divide and reproduce in two ways: mitosis and meiosis. Mitosis consists of
only one cell division whereas meiosis consists of two cell divisions. Play each animation. Use
the Notes to label which animation you think is mitosis and which one you think is meiosis. Take
a photo.
2. Let's look at the first stage of both mitosis and meiosis: Prophase. Compare Prophase during
mitosis with Prophase I during meiosis. How are they similar? How are they different?
3. Crossing over occurs only during meiosis, after Prophase I and before Metaphase I. Crossing
over never occurs during mitosis. Crossing over is the process where non-sister chromatids pair
up with each other and exchange different segments of genetic information. Explain why you
think this process would be important for meiosis cell division but not important for mitosis cell
division.

Explain why you think this process would be important for meiosis cell division but not important for mitosis cell division.
  1. Let's look at the next phase of mitosis and meiosis: Metaphase. Play the animation and look closely for Metaphase during mitosis. Compare Metaphase during mitosis with Metaphase I during meiosis. How are they similar? How are they different?
  2. Now let's look at the next phase of mitosis and meiosis: Anaphase. Play the animation and look closely for Anaphase during mitosis. Compare Anaphase during mitosis with Anaphase I during meiosis. How are they similar? How are they different?
  3. Finally let's look at the last phase of mitosis and meiosis: Telophase. Play the animation and look closely for Telophase during mitosis. Compare Telophase during mitosis with Telophase I during meiosis. How are they similar? How are they different?
  4. Let's review! Play the mitosis animation, followed by the meiosis animation. Describe what you think is the biggest difference between these two processes.
