Kelley's Personal Construct Theory: Understanding Human Perception, Slides of Personality Psychology

Dr. Anita Moral's document provides an insightful explanation of Kelley's Personal Construct Theory, which posits that people observe and interpret events based on their unique construct systems. This theory emphasizes the importance of individual perception and the role of constructs in predicting and interpreting people, life, and its events. The document also discusses the scientific format of Kelley's theory, including its fundamental postulate and eleven corollaries.

What you will learn

  • How do constructs help people predict and interpret events?
  • What is Kelley's Personal Construct Theory?
  • How does Kelley's theory explain the unique pattern of human observation and interpretation?
  • What are the key components of Kelley's theory, as outlined in the document?
  • What is the role of individual perception in Kelley's theory?

Kelley Personal Construct Theory

 Kelley proposed his theory in 1963, Kelley is considered father of cognitive clinical psychology. His theory of personality is formulated on the base of ‘‘man as a scientist’.  Kelley proposed his theory in 1963, Kelley is considered father of cognitive clinical psychology.  In another words men observe event in their environment , formulate hypothesis about that event , and test that against reality of daily life. This process helps us in predicting and interpreting about people, life and its events. But this pattern of observation and formulation is unique of each one and everybody differs to the other one, so people interpret and observe data of their experience in their own individual way. This pattern is unique of each one.  In another words men observe event in their environment , formulate hypothesis about that event , and test that against reality of daily life.  For example:  This whole process of unique pattern to observe events can be understood with the help of an example of sunglass, one person’s glass may have tint of blue over the lenses and another one’s may have the yellow tint, this tint will prepare a unique and different pattern to observe even the same event ahead in different perspective, depending on the tint of the lenses that frames their point of view. This unique pattern opted by each individual in seeing world is called ‘CONSTRUCT SYSTEM’.  constructs are subject of revision time to time.  They are changeable.  They are the continuous process.  Constructs may be discarded or altered as per situation changes in life.  Constructs are flexible.  If one construct fails to predict the desirable prediction about the event it is to be changed for adaptability this is called “Constructive Alternativism”  constructs are subject of revision time to time.  They are changeable.  They are the continuous process.  Constructs may be discarded or altered as per situation changes in life.  Constructs are flexible.  If one construct fails to predict the desirable prediction about the event it is to be changed for adaptability this is called “Constructive Alternativism”

Scientific Format of Kelley’s Theory

 Kelley presented his theory in scientific format and that is :  One Fundamental Postulate.  11 Corollaries ( about constructs). “Fundamental postulate refers the psychological process that is directed by the ways in which we anticipate events”. Psychological process refers that personality is dynamic, flowing, and moving process.  Kelley presented his theory in scientific format and that is :  One Fundamental Postulate.  11 Corollaries ( about constructs). “Fundamental postulate refers the psychological process that is directed by the ways in which we anticipate events”. Types of Corollaries

 There are 11 corollaries. Corollaries are about the type and properties of constructs.

  1. Construction Corollary: This corollary refers the similarity among repeated events, and stated that no life event can reproduce with the same effect as it produced earlier time when it occurred first. For example if you watch a movie first time , it will produce the different effect and that is not as same as it was earlier.  There are 11 corollaries. 1. Individuality Corollary : It refers people perceive events and information in different ways. They have individual differences.
  2. Organization Corollary: people perceive information and events in a pattern according to their point of view.
  3. Dichotomy Corollary: It refers that constructs are dichotomous , they are bipolar. For example; honesty can be defined only if dishonesty is there to clear the concept.

  1. Experience Corollary: This refers the continue experience and test of constructs to realize and know whether they are useful or not.
  2. Modulation Corollary: People modulate or change their constructs as per requirement of situation and as per their experiences.
  3. Fragmentation Corollary: This refers that within our construct system some may be incompatible, even though they coexist within overall pattern or construct system.

  1. Commonality Corollary: Even though people have their own unique pattern to perceive still they have some common constructs as per their culture, caste and creed.
  2. Sociality Corollary: As we are social being so we try to understand and define other people , how they think and try to predict them, and accordingly we try to modify us or them.

 Kelley also defined that people high in cognitive ability are better to define and predict events and people around.  Kelley is criticized for omitting familiar concept like Motivation and Emotion, and for relying on unrepresentative sample for research sample.  Kelley also defined that people high in cognitive ability are better to define and predict events and people around.  Kelley is criticized for omitting familiar concept like Motivation and Emotion, and for relying on unrepresentative sample for research sample.
