Q1. The following data is the field data from an open traverse survey: Co-ordinates of A = 570.000E, 410.000N WCB of line AB = 190 o45’10” Line Length Station Included Angle AB 47. BC 58.570 B 241 o48’02” CD 30.128 C 220 o50’03” DE 71.503 D 253 o15’30” (a) Plot the data at a scale of 1:1000 and measure the length of closing line EA and the WCB of the line AE. (6 Marks) (b) Tabulate the data and find the coordinates of each station. (10 Marks) (c) Calculate the length and WCB of EA. (5 Marks) (d) Comment on the use of an open traverse such as this for carrying out a survey. (4 Marks)

Q2. (a) Explain, with the aid of a diagram, the relationships between the axes that determine if a

theodolite is in perfect adjustment. (8 Marks) (b) List three tests that should be carried out to check the permanent adjustment of a theodolite. How do these tests apply to a total station? (7 Marks) (c) Points W, X and Y are in a straight line on plan. W is an inaccessible high point. A theodolite is set up on X and then on Y, 26.64 m away, and the following readings are taken to W. Station Ground Level Instrument Height Vertical Angle X 22.45 1.373 21 o^ 12’ 40” Y 23.67 1.434 28 o^ 36’ 20” Determine the reduced level of W. (10 Marks)

Q5. (i) Discuss air photography under the headings, photograph, lens, film and camera.

(8 Marks) (ii) In relation to land surveying, give 2 advantages and 2 disadvantages of photogrammetry. (4 Marks)

(ii) Outline by means of a sketch the main features of an aerial photograph. How is the principal distance related to the negative? (7 Marks)

(iv) In the use of photogrammetry for land surveying, why is it required to overlap photographs, show by means of a plan sketch how this is achieved. (6 Marks)
