HOW TECHNOLOGY CAN ENHANCE LANGUAGE LEARNING?
Every passing day, the use of technology has become inevitable for every person who
wants to be alive in the world. You have to use your phone to interact with people or you have
to use your computer to be successful while making your research. It is quite obvious that
technology is necessary and also helpful for the improvement of our life, knowledge, and
awareness. Especially children are introduced to the technology at a very early age in the last
century. When it comes to looking at technology from a language learning perspective,
technology involves all types of materials, tools, activities, and techniques that help learners
to enhance their language learning process. According to researches, in the 21st century, the
use of technology is an important and effective part of learning a new language for young
learners if it is used correctly. In a classroom environment, children can lose their
concentration and attention in a short time, and most of the time, traditional learning activities
or techniques don’t provide an enjoyable and valuable learning process. At that point,
technology offers to learners and teachers not only enjoyable but also helpful and unlimited
resources that teachers can adapt to interactive classroom activities.
The use of multimedia is one of the ways that can be applied to enhance language
learning with technology in the classroom environment. Multimedia learning can be defined
as a type of learning concept that students build mental representations from words and
pictures such as printed text, illustrations, narration, and animation for meaningful learning.
The theory is developed by Richard E. Mayer, a professor of psychology at the University of
California Santa Barbara. Multimedia learning mainly examines how to form multimedia
materials and strategies effectively during meaningful learning. It is based on three
assumptions. The first one is the dual-channel assumption. Mayer explains that the brain takes
in information and processes it in two different channels according to its representation. -The
first one is for processing visual information such as pictures, videos, or printed words and the

HOW TECHNOLOGY CAN ENHANCE LANGUAGE LEARNING?

Every passing day, the use of technology has become inevitable for every person who wants to be alive in the world. You have to use your phone to interact with people or you have to use your computer to be successful while making your research. It is quite obvious that technology is necessary and also helpful for the improvement of our life, knowledge, and awareness. Especially children are introduced to the technology at a very early age in the last century. When it comes to looking at technology from a language learning perspective, technology involves all types of materials, tools, activities, and techniques that help learners to enhance their language learning process. According to researches, in the 21st^ century, the use of technology is an important and effective part of learning a new language for young learners if it is used correctly. In a classroom environment, children can lose their concentration and attention in a short time, and most of the time, traditional learning activities or techniques don’t provide an enjoyable and valuable learning process. At that point, technology offers to learners and teachers not only enjoyable but also helpful and unlimited resources that teachers can adapt to interactive classroom activities. The use of multimedia is one of the ways that can be applied to enhance language learning with technology in the classroom environment. Multimedia learning can be defined as a type of learning concept that students build mental representations from words and pictures such as printed text, illustrations, narration, and animation for meaningful learning. The theory is developed by Richard E. Mayer, a professor of psychology at the University of California Santa Barbara. Multimedia learning mainly examines how to form multimedia materials and strategies effectively during meaningful learning. It is based on three assumptions. The first one is the dual-channel assumption. Mayer explains that the brain takes in information and processes it in two different channels according to its representation. The first one is for processing visual information such as pictures, videos, or printed words and the second one is

for processing auditory information such as spoken words or other sounds. After new information is logged in the sensory memory, it is processed and learned by learners in the working memory. Multimedia learning advises that words and pictures should be used together to activate both channels. The second one is the limited capacity assumption. All humans have a limited capacity for information. So that, we shouldn’t overload the learning process and we have to be careful while selecting the information that we want to draw attention to. The third one is the active processing assumption. In addition to the amount of information, the learners need to create a mental representation of what they learn. Mental representation and meaningful learning occur through 5 cognitive processes. Selecting proper words and selecting proper images are essential for processing if we don’t want to forget them quickly. Afterward, organizing words into a verbal model and images into a pictorial model in the working memory helps us avoid overload the memory. Lastly, integrating the representations with prior knowledge helps to move information long memory and occur meaningful learning. The use of mobile and portable devices is another way that helps to enhance language learning via technology. In our daily lives, the number of mobile phone users is more than what we imagine. It is estimated that more than 5 billion people have mobile devices. Although it was a device that had been used for communicating in its early times, mobile phones are people’s personal notebooks, diaries, credit cards, cameras anymore. Having so many different usages sometimes creates trouble for the users but mobile phones are also incredible teachers for the people that want to learn the things that they wonder about, investigate any situation or be aware of what happened in the world. It is a fact that learning through the internet or mobile devices encourages young learners to learn more about things they wonder about. The importance of the internet and mobile devices for language learning is

Classroom with their personal Google accounts and it is free for everybody. Thanks to these apps, students can follow the assignments, make their works collaboratively, and will be familiar with the idea of technology in education. In language learning, given assignments through the classroom can create visual or audial presentations, which triggers learner’s creativity. For example, giving an assignment about preparing a PowerPoint presentation about learners’ favourite film can be more attractive and beneficial for learners in terms of the amount of exposure to the language that is learned. Besides, mobile and portable devices are the tools that children can access to different kinds of games. These games are mostly didactic for children and can be an alternative way of learning a language. Even if the general aim of the game is not teaching anything, learners can change the language of it and they can try to be successful and be able to learn language according to their needs while acquiring the levels of games. For that matter, the learning process can be taken out of the classroom through technology. Lastly, technology can enhance language learning with the use of virtual reality. Virtual reality basically refers to computer-generated stimulation that people can use while interacting with artificial three-dimensional (3D) visual and sensory environments. The concept of virtual reality is expanding across different sectors from the military to medicine and entertainment day by day. In the 21st^ century, virtual reality has started to be used in the field of educational technologies and it helps students and teachers to use technology for new opportunities. The context of virtual reality which affects the education world as well as the real world transforms education into a form that can happen everywhere and in every moment. ( Can & Şimşek, 2016). Can you imagine that you are in the class with your classmates and the teacher, try to find the correct answers to the teacher’s questions while discussing with friends and learn about new things even if in reality, you are not physically side-by-side and even you are separated by four thousand miles? That can be possible with virtual reality in education

and especially in language learning. As we said before, one of the reasons for people's failures in language learning is that they are not exposed to the language, its culture, its natural environment, and real communications with native speakers because of distances. However, virtual reality offers learners opportunities such as interacting with foreign people, creating real environments in which learning language can be used by students in real communication, which means that virtual reality in language learning transforms the technology into a real used language environment. In conclusion, learners of the 21st^ century are the ones whose learning process can be easily facilitated with technology and it should be remembered that it can be sometimes difficult to teach them a foreign language in just a classroom environment. In that sense, technology can be one of the ways to create a real, enjoyable, and informational atmosphere for language learners and help learners to gain language and cognitive skills outside the classroom or with the activities inside the classroom.
