Do the “Explore the Web” exercise on page 106 of the e-Book to identify basic industries
for the Wichita MSA. Because websites change regularly, follow the revised steps
below:
1) Go to the main U.S. Census website: www.census.gov. From the left column,
choose “American FactFinder.”
2) From the left column of the American FactFinder page, choose “Data Sets.”
3) From there, click the radio button beside “Census 2000 Summary File 3 (SF 3) -
Sample Data” and choose “Detailed Tables.”
4) On this page, set the geography type to “Metropolitan Statistical Area/Consolidated
Metropolitan Statistical Area” and then select the “Wichita, KS MSA.” Click “Add”
to add the geography selection. Next, go back and change the geography type to
“Nation” and add this to the geography selection. Now click on “Next.”
5) Scroll down and select “Table P49 – Sex by Industry for the Employed Civilian
Population 16+ Years” and view the results.
Your assignment is to prepare a brief write-up that identifies the major and minor
industries that are basic employment for the Wichita MSA. Write a paragraph or so on
what this means for the Wichita area.
With your write-up, include a table showing (a) the total employment in each industry
classification for the U.S. and the Wichita MSA; (2) the percentage of total employment
in each industry for the U.S. and the Wichita MSA; and (3) the location quotient for each
industry for the Wichita MSA.
Your final product should be typewritten and professional in appearance and fit on a
single page.
