INTRODUCTION
[Company name] has a legal and a moral duty to control the work activities of contractors. This
will concern contractors entering the company premises and also contractors working on sites
over which we have control. Contractors also have obligations to plan, monitor and control their
work to minimise risks to all persons who may be affected by their activities. Similarly, if the
contractor employs sub-contractors to carry out some or all of the work, all parties will have
health and safety responsibilities. The extent of each party's responsibilities will depend on the
circumstances. Consultation and communication are key to the control of contractors.
The intent of this procedure is to demonstrate how we will facilitate effective control over our
contractors and how we manage our communication activities with them.
We will show how we meet the requirements of the Health and Safety at Work etc. Act, the
Management of Health and Safety at Work Regulations and other statutory provisions not listed
here.
We will:
ensure that we appoint competent contractors; and
ensure that their activities are controlled to avoid/minimise risk to persons affected by their
activities.
1.0 PURPOSE
The intent of this procedure is to effectively manage contractors’ activities to
avoid/minimise risk to any affected persons.
2.0 SCOPE
This procedure outlines the management of contractors and covers all areas of our
activities throughout the business.
3.0 ROLES & RESPONSIBILITIES
The person responsible for implementing this procedure will carry out or delegate such
functions as necessary to ensure the effective day-to-day operation of our health and safety
arrangements.
Managers/Supervisors are responsible for:
implementing this procedure in their area of responsibility;
ensuring that an effective management process is in place between the Company and
our contractors; and
providing appropriate induction training or other suitable training for contractors
where required.

Contractors are required to:

  • plan, monitor and control their work to avoid/minimise risks to all persons who may be affected by their activities. 4.0 PROCEDURE The management of contractors and their interaction with health and safety will be carried out in accordance with this procedure, relevant legislation and HSE Guidance. We will ensure that we:
  • undertake a review of company activities and identify where contractors are used;
  • create an approved contractors list and only use contractors from the list;
  • receive risk assessments and method statements from contractors before work begins;
  • arrange a formal programme of induction training, toolbox talks or other health and safety training where required;
  • communicate and consult with contractors to ensure that they fully understand their duties and responsibilities to carry out their work safely;
  • hold specific health and safety meetings with contractors; and
