CHAPTER 11- GENDER

Sex: Biological characteristics distinguishing males and females. Gender: Social characteristics, bahviors and attitudes which vary from one society to another and refer to what the group considers proper for its males and females. *We inherit our sex, but we learn our gender. Social Significance of Gender  Gender is a means by which society controls its members; it sorts us, on the basis of sex, into different life experiences.  Gender opens and closes doors to power, prestije and property.  Master status cutting across all aspects of life. Difference vs. Inequality  Patriarchy (ataerkillik): A system in which mean as a group dominate women, and authority is vested in men.  Sexism (cinsiyetçilik): Prejudice, stereotyping or discrimination typically against women, on the basis of sex. Gender Inequality  Sex typing of work  Gender tracking (men and women are channelled into different educational paths)  The Pay Gap  The Testosterone Bonus

 The Glass Ceiling (an invisible barrier that prevents women from advancing to top levels)  Gender inequality is not some accidental, hit-or-miss affair. Rather, each society’s institutions work together to maintain the group’s particular forms of inequality. Feminism  The philosophy that men and women should be politically, economically and socially equal and that gender stratification must be met with organized resistance.  Feminists further believe that biology is not a destiny and that stratification by gender is wrong. Sexual Harassment: the abuse of one’s position of authority to force unwanted sexual demands on someone. Gender Strfatification: refers to unequal access to property, power, and prestige on the basis of sex. Each society establishes a structure that, on the basis of sex and gender, opens and closes doors to its privileges. “Nature versus nurture” or ‘’Inherited or learned’’: Debate refers to whether differences in the behaviors of males and females are caused by inherited (biological) or learned (cultural) characteristics. Almost all sociologists take the side of nurture. Nurture: bir bireyin yetişme şekli *Gender inequalities include education, politics, pay and domination in the form of violence, including female circumcision.
