1. (a) What is meant by cathodic and anodic inhibitors?.
(b) What are the requirements of a paint?.
(c) Describe the phosphate coatings. [5+6+5]
2. (a) What are the draw backs of raw rubber? How are its properties improved?
(b) How is Buna - S Rubber prepared? Write its uses. [8+8]
3. (a) Explain the difference between municipal water and the water used for indus-
trial purposes such as the one used in steam boilers.
(b) Describe the sand filter used for the purification of municipal water. [8+8]
4. 73,000 lit of hard water were collected from Kurnool Town, in A.P. The hardness
was removed by passing it through azeolite softener. The softner then required
250lit of NaCl solution containing 160 g/lit of NaCl for regeneration. Calculate the
hardness of the sample of water. [16]
5. (a) What is Cetane Number? Write a brief note on antiknocking agents.
(b) Describe fractional distillation of petroleum. [8+8]
6. (a) An oil on analysis gave the following results. C=85%, H=12% and O=3%.
Find the weight of minimum air required for burning of 1kg of the fuel .
(b) Write a note on synthetic petrol. [8+8]
7. What are electrical insulators? Describe the characteristics and engineering appli-
cations of these materials. [16]
8. Explain the following two theories for the mechanism of the lubricants.
(a) Boundary lubrication
(b) Extreme pressure lubrication. [8+8]

  2. (a) What are heterochain polymers? Give examples. (b) What are Antioxidants? How are they useful in compounding of resins? (c) Write a note on Buna- N Rubber. [4+6+6]
  3. Compare and contrast the lime-soda process, permutit process and ion- exchange resin process used for softening of water. [16]
  4. Calculate the temporary, permanent and total hardness in mg/litre of a sample of water containing the following salts :- Mg(HCO 3 ) 2 = 14.6mg/litre; Ca(HCO 3 ) 2 = 16.2 mg/litre MgCl 2 = 9.5mg/litre; CaSO 4 = 13.6 mg/litre ( Assume the atomic mass of Ca to be 40 and that of Mg to be 24). [16]
  5. (a) What is meant by straight run gasoline? How it is different from cracked gasoline and polymer gasoline? (b) What is octane number? How the octane number of fuel can be improved? (c) Write a note on cetane number? [6+5+5]
  6. (a) Discuss in detail Bergius procedure for the manufacture of synthetic petrol. (b) What are the characteristics of a good Fuel? [8+8]
