● (^) Tornado Tauktae that heightened into an 'incredibly serious cyclonic tempest' made landfall on Gujarat coast late on Monday evening with wind speed somewhere in the range of 150kmph and 160kmph, the India Meteorological Department (IMD) said, abandoning a path of total destruction. ● Formed in the Arabian Sea, Cyclone Tauktae has killed 104 people so far, which is more than the toll from any single cyclone from the Arabian Sea over the last one decade. ● (^) Tropical Storm Aila struck southern Bangladesh and eastern India on May 27, 2009. Aila's wind speeds ranged from 74 kilometers per hour (46 miles per hour or 40 knots) to 120 kilometers per hour (75 miles per hour or 65 knots). ● It reported that floods and mudslides killed at least 191 people and left hundreds of thousands more homeless.
Wind speed: Cyclone Tauktae ● (^) The storm continued intensifying, and at 03:00 UTC on May 17 Tauktae reached its peak intensity as an extremely severe cyclonic storm, with maximum 3-minute sustained winds of 185 km/h (115 mph), maximum 1-minute sustained winds of 220 km/h (135 mph), and a minimum central pressure of 950 millibars (28 inHg) ● (^) Afternoon of 17th May 2021- it had the maximum intensity of 180-190 gusting to 210 kmph ● (^) It had a longer period of the impact of cyclone intensity over Gujarat (about 24 hrs from 1730 IST of 17th to 1730 IST/1200 UTC of 18th May)
How does climate change affect cyclone tauktae ● (^) Tropical cyclones draw their energy from warm waters, which is why they form over warm pool regions where temperatures are above 28°C. ● The Arabian Sea, however, used to be cool, but at the time of the cyclogenesis process of Tauktae, the SSTs in the Arabian Sea were 30-31°C. Tauktae clearly demonstrates the relationship between global warming and the genesis of cyclones.
