Drunk driving is not something that happens occasionally. It happens everyday of the year. A lot of times, drunk driving victims aren’t the ones who have been drinking. They could be driving home from work one day and get hit by someone who has been drinking. However, some people believe we are making too much of drunk driving. But take a look at these statistics. In a year, around 10,000 people died of a drunk driving accident. 50% to 75% of people who have been convicted of drunk driving still drive with an expired license. When we think about drunk driving, we think about teens. Teens are not the only ones who drink and drive but they are mostly the ones who make the wrong choices when it comes to drinking. One reason why teens drink and drive is because of peer pressure. Teens often get sucked in to drinking. They feel that it is “cool” to drink and drive. The one thing that teens don’t realize is how much one drink can do. One drink can change a life or often many lives in a matter of minutes. In the long run, drunk driving is a

serious problem and needs to be prevented.

There are multiple solutions to prevent drunk driving. Sobriety checkpoints are a successful way to help stop drunk drivers. More sobriety checkpoints increase the chance of people getting arrested for drunk driving. If more arrests are taking place, it causes people to be more cautious on the roads. Sobriety checkpoints are also legal if conducted properly. They are an effective and safe way to stop drunk drivers from causing trouble on the roads. In opposition, some believe that sobriety points are too random. In reality, sobriety checkpoints do more good than bad. It is just another way to stop drunk drivers from creating more deaths on roads. Another effective way to prevent drunk driving is to have a designated driver when out drinking. When out drinking, a designated driver is someone who is willing to drive home their drunken friends. Designated drivers prevent an impaired driver from potentially getting in an accident. doesn’t mean that we should too. To sum up, a higher drinking age is the better turnout. On the other hand, a few people think that a lower drinking age would help stop young drinking. They say that teens think it is “cool” to underage drink; therefore the drinking age should be lowered. They also say that drinking isn’t the problem; it is abusively drinking that is the killer. This statement is wrong because just one drink can do lots damage to a young teens mind.

Drunk Driving Is a Crime?

(It's Not Worth All the Hassle If You Get Caught) Driving while under the influence is a crime. Because of the hazard that it causes to the public safety, drunk driving is treated as a criminal offense and one that carries increasingly greater penalties in all 50 states. If you plan to drink and drive this weekend, you could end up with a criminal record, and depending on the circumstances, it could be a felony. Forget about the danger that you are putting yourself and others into for a

moment, if you get caught driving after drinking alcohol or doing drugs, you will end up with a criminal record that could affect your employment and your future.

The Consequences of Drunk

Driving

Here is what will happen if you get stopped drinking and driving:

  • You will be treated as a criminal. You will be handcuffed and taken to jail. You or someone you know will have to post a bond before you will be released from jail.
  • You will have to go to court and face a judge or jury. If you had a blood-alcohol level more than 0.08, you will be found guilty of drunk driving in all 50 states.
  • You will have to pay a fine and court costs. You will probably be placed on probation and have to pay a monthly probation fee.
  • Your driver's license will be suspended or revoked. To get your driving privileges back, in most states, you will have to go through an assessment of your drinking habits and take educational classes about alcohol. 8 | Page

Here are some tips if you plan to drink during the upcoming holiday period:

  • If you drink, don't drive period, no matter how much you have had.
  • Plan ahead and always designate a sober driver before the event begins.
  • If you have been drinking, call a taxi, a friend or family member to come pick you up.
  • Just stay where you are until you sleep it off.
  • Don't ride with someone else who is impaired.
  • Take the keys away from someone, if you think they are too impaired to drive. Many areas offer "Sober Taxi" services free of charge during holiday periods. They will drive you home at no charge if you just call and ask. Almost all law enforcement agencies increase patrols and sobriety checkpoints around the holidays. Don't take the chance. It's simply not worth it.
