CAREER AND RESEARCH
In 1907 , he cleared the Indian Finance Service (IFS) exam and was posted
in Kolkata.
While working at the Indian Finance Department , he continued research
at the Indian Association for the Cultivation of Science (IACS).
His research on light, acoustics, and optics gained international
recognition.

In 1921 , during a trip to Europe, he was fascinated by the color of the sea and sky,
which led him to research light scattering.
On February 28, 1928 , along with his student K.S. Krishnan , he discovered the
Raman Effect , which explained the scattering of light and its interaction with
molecules.
This discovery proved that light changes its wavelength when passing through a
transparent medium.
February 28 is now celebrated as National Science Day in India in his honor.
