Q1.

(a) Describe the characteristics of Shape Memory Alloys and reference THREE of their common

applications.

(5 Marks)

(b) A turbine engine disc is made from grade 5 titanium alloy, analysis listed below

TYPICAL ANALYSIS Grade 5 Al. V. Fe Ox. 6% 4% 0.25% 0.2%

Explain why this material would be the preferred option, giving its advantageous to other alloy

metals and how the alloying elements listed above contribute to the properties desired for this

material.

(15 Marks)

(c) Aluminium and its alloys are used extensively from Aerospace to domestic, with specific

reference to products/parts explain why Al alloys were chosen for these applications.

(13 Marks)

Q

(a) List and explain FOUR methods of chemical cleaning processes (7 Marks)

(b) List FOUR reasons why manufactured products require coating and THREE coating processes

(5 Marks)

(c) A steel plate with surface area 190cm^2 is to be nickel plated. What average plating thickness will

result if 20A is applied for 15min in an acid electrolyte bath. Take plating constant
