Midterm Examination
Cellular Structures & Functions: EBTY101L
Max Marks: 50 Time: 10:00-11.00 am
Instructions
1. No plagiarism will be accepted.
2. Without proper formula and calculation, no marks will be provided in numerical
questions.
3. Submit on/before time.
Q1. Calculate the free-energy change of pumping Ca2+ from the cytosol, where its
concentration is about 1x10-7 M, to the extracellular fluid, where its concentration is about 1.0
mM. Assume a temperature of 37˚C and a standard transmembrane potential of -50 mV for
the plasma membrane. Consider R=8.315 J mol-1. K-1, Faraday constant= 96.5 kJ V-1.mol-1.
(10 Marks)
Q2A. Write down all the roles of cytoskeleton proteins which are discussed in our course
so far? Be specific as much as possible. (6 Marks)
Q2B. List out the 4 major differences in the ER signalling sequence and ER retention
signalling sequences. (4 Marks)
Q3A. Name the following protein. What is the importance of this protein in Medical
Biotechnology? (5 Marks)
Q3B. Identify and write down the name all the biomolecules A-E. (5 Marks)
Q4. Structures of cellular organelles are very important for their respective functions. Any
deformation in the structure may lead to loss of function. If yes, explain this biological
phenomenon in detail with example. Be as specific as possible. (10 Marks)
Q5A.Name the acid hydrolases which degrades the carbohydrate and phospholipids in the
lysosome, respectively? (2 Marks)
