(a) With respect to a Heart Lung machine, list the main design features required to control the following parameters

  1. CO2 removal from the blood,
  2. temperature of the blood in the circulation system
  3. method to stop and start the beating heart.
  4. method of removal of oxygen deprived blood

Your design should include, methods to alert the operator of the machine in the event of the machines inability to achieve the operator settings and systems to prevent harm to the Patient.

(b) What method would you employ to detect blood clots during cardiac surgery, what should be administered to the patient to prevent clotting of the blood during the surgery? (5 marks)

(a) List the main design features required in a typical blood circuit of a Haemodialysis machine. Your design should include

 A method to provide the correct rate of diffusion,

 Measurement and safety features that are important for the effective operation of this section of the machine and to maximise safety for the Patient. Use diagrams to support your answer. (15 marks)

(b) List the main design features that are required to provide feedback so that fluid flow and

pressure of the dialysate is controlled within the fluid circuit of a Haemodialysis machine. Your design should include measurement and safety features that are important for the effective operation of this section of the machine and for the Patient. Use diagrams to support your answer. Why is RO water used in Dialysis machines?

(a) Discuss the clinical benefits of the endoscope. (5 marks)

(b) Reproduce a cross sectional diagram describing the construction of a typical flexible endoscope. Explain the purpose of each of the components. (10 marks)

(c) Discuss the required functionality of the “control body” of a flexible endoscope? Use diagrams to support your answer. (6 marks)

(d) Describe the “light guide tube connection” involved in the construction of a flexible endoscope. (4 marks)
