Section A – Answer three of the following questions

  1. Briefly describe the cardiac cycle and how the hearts rhythmic beat is maintained by the pacemaker
  2. Homeostasis is the maintenance of a constant internal environment and this includes the regulation of blood glucose levels. Describe how blood glucose levels are controlled.
  3. With the aid of a diagram outline the structure of the neuron
  4. With the aid of a diagram outline the structure of the nephron, the functional unit of the kidney and outline how urine is produced

Section B – Answer ONE question.

  1. Innate or nonspecific defence can be divided into internal and external mechanisms. Briefly describe two internal and two external mechanisms
  2. Write a short note on two of the following: a. Red blood cell (erythrocytes) b. Enzymes of the small intestine c. Neurotransmitters
