Boudicca’s

rebellion

Can I explain if Boudicca was a villain or a hero? (Can I address a historical question?)

  • Understand how Boudicca fought back against the Romans.
  • Understand how different people can have different points of view

Setting the Scene

The year is AD 60. The Romans have occupied Britain for 17 years. Many Celtic tribes have managed to continue to live in much the same way they always did, making deals with the Romans to leave them in peace. However, a major rebellion is about to take place which will affect the lives of many people, Celts and Romans alike. You are going to examine the events, watching various videos, then read some newspaper articles.

Historical sources

Boudica – hero or villain?

  • The reports we have found about the battle at Watling Street were written by a Roman called Tacitus, years after the battle. Do you think they are reliable sources?
  • Tacitus’ father in law had fought in Britain three times and was a military tribune under Tacitus. Does this fact make the report more or less reliable?

Boudicca – hero or villain? Which of these newspaper headlines would have been used by the Romans and which one by the Celts? Explain your reasons.
