The Book Thief
1. Point of view Death is an omniscient narrator who switches
between first person and a closed third person point of view,
describing all the main characters’ thoughts and emotions as
well as his own. This shows that he is a very important
character as he makes you understand the story much better.
Furthermore, it is valid to suggest that the character can also
be terrifying since he is “Death” himself.
2.
a) Death introduces himself as the narrator of the book. He describes
his work and his preference for a chocolate brown sky when he
collects people's souls. He lists the main elements of the story to
come, and reveals that he has seen the main character, the book
thief, three times. The first time he saw her was on a train where he
had come to collect. This shows that shows that “Death” is the main
character and that he has a lot of power over people.
Furthermore, it is valid to suggest that since “Death” has this much
power people have to watch out for the things they do.
b) The bullet point list that the writer uses are showing an interesting
way of reading the novel because it puts the main words in individual
sections. This means that it would make it easier for the reader to
understand the text while being able to not lose track of it.
Furthermore, it is valid to suggest that this is an effective way of
presenting such text to a diverse audience.
