Formulas of Number Series:
- 1 + 2 + 3 + 4 + 5 + … + n = n(n + 1)/
- (1^2 + 2^2 + 3^2 + ..... + n^2 ) = n ( n + 1 ) (2n + 1) / 6
- (1^3 + 2^3 + 3^3 + ..... + n^3 ) = (n(n + 1)/ 2)^2
- Sum of first n odd numbers = n^2
- Sum of first n even numbers = n (n + 1)
Mathematical Formulas:
- (a + b)(a - b) = (a^2 - b^2 )
- (a + b)^2 = (a^2 + b^2 + 2ab)
- (a - b)^2 = (a^2 + b^2 - 2ab)
- (a + b + c)^2 = a^2 + b^2 + c^2 + 2(ab + bc + ca)
- (a^3 + b^3 ) = (a + b)(a^2 - ab + b^2 )
- (a^3 - b^3 ) = (a - b)(a^2 + ab + b^2 )
- (a^3 + b^3 + c^3 - 3abc) = (a + b + c)(a^2 + b^2 + c^2 - ab - bc - ac)
H.C.F : H.C.F stands for Highest Common Factor. The other names for H.C.F are Greatest Common Divisor (G.C.D) and Greatest Common Measure (G.C.M). The H.C.F. of two or more numbers is the greatest number that divides each one of them exactly.
L.C.M : The least number which is exactly divisible by each of the given numbers is called the least common multiple of those numbers.
LCM= (LCM of the numerators)/(HCF of the denominators)
HCF= (HCF of the numerators)/(LCM of the denominators)
Product of two numbers = Product of their H.C.F. and L.C.M.

PROBLEMS ON NUMBERS
A problem on numbers is one of the sub-categories in number system. Question is the form of a puzzle. To calculate problems on numbers: Analyze the given conditions Assume the unknown numbers and form equations. Finally, find the unknown numbers. Examples:
- A number is as much greater than 36 as is less than 86. Find the number? Solution: Let the number = x x – 36 = 86 – x = 86 + 36 = 122 2x = 122 122/2 = 61 x = 61
- Find a number such that when 15 is subtracted from 7 times the number, the result is 10 more than twice the number? Solution: Let the number = x 7x – 15 = 2x + 10 5x = 25 x = 25 / 5 = 5
- The sum of two numbers is 184. If one third of the one exceeds one-seventh of the other by 8, find the smaller number. Solution: Let the numbers be x and 184-x x/3 – 184-x / 7 = 8 7x – 3 (184-x) = 168 10x = 720 x = 72 The numbers are 72 and 112 Hence the smaller number is 72
- The difference of two numbers is 11 and one fifth of their sum is 9. Find the numbers. Solution: Let the numbers = x and y x – y =11 ……………………(1) 1/5 (x+y) = 9 x + y = 45 …………………..(2) Add (1) & (2) 2x = 56 x = 28 Numbers are 28 and 17
- The average of four consecutive even numbers is 27. Find the largest of these numbers? Solution: Let the numbers be = x, x+2, x+4, x+ Sum of these numbers = 27 * 4 = 108 or 4x = 96 or x = 24 Largest number = x + 6 = 30
SQUARES AND CUBES SQUARES: Tips:
(a+b)^2 = a^2 + 2ab + b^2
EXAMPLE:
1. (12)^2
By using a^2 2ab b^2 Ie., a = 1 ; b = 2 a^2 2ab b^2 (^12) 212 22
Hence, the square of 12 = 144
2. 26^ By using a^2 2ab b^2 Ie., a = 2 ; b = 6 a^2 2ab b 2
(^22) 226 62
(add 2 as the carry over) 4 + 2 = 6 (In the final calculation take the whole number to the solution)
(add 3 as the carry over) 24 + 3 = 27 (only take 7 and carry over 2)
(only take the unit digit number)
Hence, the square of 26 = 676
Factorization method:
- 676
26 2 676 4 46 276 276 0
Hence, 676 = 26
- 3364
58 5 3364 25 108 864 864 0
Hence, 3364 = 58
CUBE ROOT:
Tips:
Step 1: Group the number (from right to left) as three digit in one group ie., 17 and 576 Step 2: Group 1 576 = check the last digit ie., 6 6
Unit digit of number cubed Unit digit in cube roots 1 1 2 8 3 7 4 4 5 5 6 6 7 3 8 2 9 9 0 0
Step 3: Group 2 17 = comes in between 2^3 = 8 and 3^3 = 27, from this 2 options select the smaller number 2^3 = 8 2 Hence, the cube root of 14576 = 26
Step 1: Group the number (from right to left) as three digit in one group ie., 140 and 608 Step 2: Group 1 608 = check the last digit ie., 8 2 Step 3: Group 2 140 = comes in between 5^3 = 125 and 6^3 = 216, from this 2 options select the smaller number 5^3 = 125 5 Hence, the cube root of 140608 = 52
