Ria is a student of class X. For the last one year she is working very hard as she is to appear for her board examination but she did not do well in her last annual examination. She wakes up early morning everyday to prepare for her studies, and if she fails to wake up on time, she becomes very upset and gets angry on her mother. Saikat wants everything perfect in his business. He can not trust others in his work and manages every bit of his work. Due his perfectionism he overloads himself with halluva of work and often fell sick. He suffers from chronic gastric problem and easily affected by cough and cold.

Gargi is a homemaker. She efficiently manages all the problems at home and has a detailed grasp on every aspect of her domestics. But she becomes a little hesitant when it comes to going to Bank or public dealing. She cannot go out without her husband and in any case if her husband is not around she finds herself in a mess.

People often experience a general state of worry or fear before confronting something challenging such as a test, examination, recital, or interview, even when deciding marriage, joining a new job, shifting from one home to another or when face some new challenges. These feelings are easily justified and considered normal. Anxiety is considered a problem when symptoms interfere with a person's ability to sleep or otherwise function. Generally speaking, anxiety occurs when a reaction is out of proportion with what might be normally expected in a situation. Above mentioned cases give a glimpse of how anxiety may be manifested in our day to day life. Do you have any of them?

Anxiety Disorders are common and are off various forms. Some of the common anxiety disorders are Panic Disorder where person experiences sudden bouts of anxiety or panic attack, Phobia or irrational fear (like fear of height, closed place, crowded place etc.), Generalized Anxiety Disorder where person experiences anxiety in every task, Social Anxiety or fear of facing other people, Obsessive Compulsive

Thoughts I cannot do anything right, everything I do goes wrong

Physical symptoms Poor concentration, tired, lethargic, loss of interest

Behaviour Unmotivated, stops meeting friends and going out, becomes withdrawn.

Disorder where unwanted irrational thoughts force the individual to do repeated ritualistic acts (like washing, checking, maintaining symmetry etc.). Or anxiety might get manifested in other form like school or office refusal, vague physical complain or psychosomatic complains, fainting spell in the absence of physical or neurological causes. In a simplified form, anxiety can be expressed in terms of clusters of symptoms. Main three clusters are THOUGHT (what will happen if…? I am just weak. I am a failure), PHYSICAL SYMPTOMS (palpitation, heavy breathing, muscle tension, sweating, poor concentration, disturbed sleep, tired, butterfly in stomach) and BEHAVIOUR (avoidance or procrastinate, withdrawn, excessive engagement, irritable, poor motivation).

As educated human we are concerned about our health. We acknowledge the importance of doing physical exercise, taking healthy nutritious foods, taking food at right time etc. But what about our Mental Health? Does only taking care of the physical health will help the mental health? Rather we need to focus more on our mental health so that we are better resilient person who can cope better in day to day anxiety or stress. If you can not feel right, you can not act right. And if you are unable to act right, you may not be productive as any professional, mother, father, friend, student, child, even as lover and for this society.

We can prevent many of the above mentioned anxiety disorders if we start take care of the mental health from today. I am mentioning few methods that can really make you an emotionally powerful person if those are practiced regularly who can win the world. Yes, as without regular physical exercise we can not have toned muscles, without practice mental muscle also does not develop.

How can I reduce my anxiety?

  1. Understanding more about anxiety.
  2. (^) Learning how to challenge your unhelpful thoughts and see things in a more realistic light.
  3. Improving your problem solving skills.
  4. Learning how to reduce the amount of time you spend worrying.
  5. Learning how you can feel more relaxed (physically and mentally).
  6. (^) Learning how to stop avoiding the things that make you anxious.

Becoming aware about kind of manifestation (thought or behavioural or physical or all) you are having when you are anxious is important. Your strategy will depend on the symptoms. Anxiety also tells you that there is some problem, real or unreal. Real problems are to be solved and unreal problems are to be challenged. HOW?

Whenever you are having negative thoughts (e.g. I am a failure), try to look for what are the evidences you are having in support of this thought. Better to maintain a thought book for future reference. Most of the time we will discover that rarely we are having evidences in favour of the negative thoughts. After the discovery impact of anxiety disappears.

If the anxiety is due to real problem, try to note 5-8 probable solutions of the problem. You may take help from others or you can imagine yourself how your father or teacher or best friend would have suggested you to deal with the problem. Then go for cost benefit calculation of the probable solutions and take the best one. Implement that to see the result. If you get the solution, celebrate; and if not choose another solution from the list. Remember, problem solving increases the probability of solution, but if you don’t go for solving, no solution will come.
